The Infrastructure of Community Ownership
What is being built in Ward 8 can be built in communities across the country.
What is being built in Ward 8 now is the coordinated infrastructure and sustained investment to turn the foundation that is there into systemic change. By bringing together residents, community organizations, and institutional partners, we are securing a stronger and more resilient community for generations to come.
The W8CED is partnering with The Coalition (formerly CNHED) to develop the Ward 8 Community Investment Initiative. As the fiduciary lead for the W8CII, The Coalition will help the Think Tank identify public and private funds to strengthen the economic stability of Ward 8 residents. The W8CII will manage Ward 8 assets, provide economic support for local businesses, and give programmatic support to the W8CED funding its parent and tenant associations, resident trainings, and operational expenses.
the Phased Approach to Impact
Phase 1: Strategic Alignment
Continue to build a powerful, unified coalition aligned on shared community priorities and co-creating concrete implementation plans.
Phase 2: Targeted Implementation
Launch 2 to 3 high-impact, community-based strategies focused on retaining influence over property development projects, housing stability, workforce development, capital access, and local ownership.
Phase 3: Long-Term Sustainability
Maintain permanent, resident-governed community investment infrastructure to secure Ward 8's financial autonomy.

PTA
Parent & Tenant Association
Residents protecting homes, schools, and blocks
The Parent Tenant Association is led by the residents in the community. This is where families and neighbors organize to protect their homes, strengthen their schools, and direct real resources toward the blocks they live on.
The Parent
Turning schools into economic anchors: directing local contracts and resident-owned services toward the families they serve.
The Tenant
Turning housing into lasting community ownership, using tenants' rights (TOPA), cooperatives, and land trusts to protect against displacement.
As the Community-Owned Investment Fund takes shape, the Parent & Tenant Association is what will direct it, deciding which properties to protect, which developments threaten families, and where community ownership takes root first. Residents closest to the problem lead the solution.
Leadership Academy
Building the next generation of Ward 8 leaders
The Leadership Academy is the pipeline for the next generation of Ward 8 organizers, policy advocates, and community entrepreneurs. It is where residents gain the skills, networks, and confidence to lead.
How it works
Participants move through a structured curriculum covering community organizing, policy advocacy, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship and then put those skills to work on real Ward 8 challenges.
Leadership is not given. It is built through practice, mentorship, and accountability to the community.
Whether you are a resident, organization, funder, or institution there is a role for you in building community ownership in Ward 8.
